Why choose Greece for fertility treatment?

Greece offers numerous advantages for fertility treatments: high-quality medical services, affordable rates, experienced fertility specialists, and a wide range of treatment options. There are minimum waiting lists for egg or sperm donors, and the country has one of the most progressive IVF laws in Europe. Additionally, Greece's mild climate provides an ideal environment for healing and relaxation, making it the perfect destination for your fertility journey.

What is the legal framework for ART in Greece?

Greece's assisted reproductive techniques are governed by Law 3305/2005, designed to ensure that all procedures prioritize the best interests of the conceived child. Below is an overview of the key provisions:

Women can undergo IVF treatment up to the age of 54, with additional requirements for those aged 50-54, while there is no age limit for men.

Same-sex female couples can access treatment if one partner proceeds as a single woman using donor sperm and signs a notarial deed.

Unfortunately, same-sex male couples are not explicitly permitted to undergo fertility treatments, including surrogacy.

Non-married couples require a notarial deed either confirming the woman’s single status or the partner’s agreement to treatment and legal fatherhood. Notarial deeds cost €40-70 and can be signed upon arrival in Greece.

Sex selection is allowed only for medical reasons.

Egg and sperm donation is anonymous.

Surrogacy is permitted with medical justification, court approval, and proof of permanent residency for both the couple and the surrogate.

Embryo transfer limits depend on age and egg type:

- Under 35 years old, 1-2 embryos.

- 35-39 years old, up to 2 embryos in early cycles and 3 in subsequent cycles.

- 40+ years old, up to 3 embryos and up to 4 in certain cases.

- For donor eggs, only 2 embryos can be transferred regardless of age.

This framework ensures access to treatment while maintaining ethical standards and patient safety.

What are the Safety and Quality Standards in Greek IVF Clinics?

Greece prioritizes the safety and quality of IVF treatments through strict regulation and oversight of its fertility clinics. A dedicated regulatory body, the Greek National Authority of Assisted Reproduction, ensures compliance with Greek IVF laws.

Do I have to speak Greek?

Absolutely not! English is widely spoken throughout Greece, including in airports, transportation services, hotels, and other key areas. Physicians and clinic staff are fluent in English and capable of clearly explaining all aspects of the treatment process, ensuring effective communication for international patients.

How long do I have to stay in Greece for my fertility treatment?

The length of stay in Greece for a U.S. patient undergoing fertility treatment depends on the specific procedure and treatment plan. Below are some general guidelines:

Initial Consultation and Testing: If the patient opts for an in-person consultation, they may need to stay for 2–3 days to complete initial assessments and plan their treatment.

IVF Cycle with Own Eggs: For a full IVF cycle, patients typically stay for 10–14 days, covering the ovarian stimulation process, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer.

Egg Donation: If using donor eggs, the stay may be shorter, around 5–7 days, since the ovarian stimulation phase is not required.

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET): For FET, the stay can be as brief as 2–3 days, as no stimulation or egg retrieval is involved.

Surrogacy: For surrogacy arrangements, the length of stay will depend on legal requirements and the specific case, typically requiring multiple visits to Greece.

We encourage you to consider plan for some leisure time during the recovery phase of the treatment, such as relaxing in Greece’s beautiful scenery, beaches, or cultural sites. We will coordinate along with the fertility clinic in advance and we will work together to minimize the time away from your home.
